Rhodes Must Fall

On Friday 20th March 2015, students at the University of Cape Town held a protest outside the Bremner Building, which is the heart of the institution’s administration. This protest formed part of the Rhodes Must Fall campaign launched a few weeks earlier.

Students demanded that the statue of English colonialist Cecil John Rhodes must be removed from their campus. They also accuse the university of institutional racism and a lack of transformation in post apartheid South Africa. A number of speakers addressed the crowd of protesters.

Every year, at the end of the Islamic month of fasting called Ramadaan, Muslims in Cape Town make their way to Three Anchor Bay beachfront to sight the new moon. Sighting the birth of the new moon would signal the celebration of Eid ul-Fitr, the festival marking the end of Ramadaan.

The Crescent Observer Society, also known as the Maankykers, looks out to the skies to seek the new moon. They are following a tradition based on the sayings of Islam’s Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him.
